Insights into LSU Veterinary Medicine Program offers an interactive look at the profession
August 11, 2026
Each summer, our Insights into LSU Vet Med Program opens pathways for students from historically underrepresented groups through both intentional recruitment and increased retention initiatives. The Insights into LSU Vet Med Program provides students with an immersive learning opportunity.
This two-week-long summer program features undergraduate students from universities across Louisiana and beyond. The program gives students a view into the veterinary school experience through demonstrations and interactive activities that they participate in.
Students explore both small and large animal medicine by interacting with animals and assisting in medical procedures. Parasitology sessions allow close examination of worms and parasite samples. Clinical skills workshops provide practical training on administering injections and oral medications, fostering essential clinical confidence. In our Cardiology service, students gain valuable experience performing heart diagnostic tests and interpreting results at a veterinary teaching hospital. Anatomy Lab introduces students to how organ systems, bones, and muscles connect, providing a look at the physical foundation needed to diagnose diseases, perform surgeries, and conduct accurate clinical exams.
A special day at the Audubon Zoo offers a behind-the-scenes perspective on zoo animal care and a chance to learn directly from an experienced zoo veterinarian. The program concludes with professionally conducted mock interviews designed to prepare students for the veterinary school admissions process by offering constructive feedback and interview practice.
Pictured are examples of this summer’s learning experiences led by our clinicians.
