Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences
Leading the Next Wave of Discovery
The Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences (DOCS) offers an unique interdisciplinary experience that links the world's oceans with the coastal zone. Faculty from fields spanning chemistry, oceanography, engineering, biology, meteorology, ecology, and numerical modeling work together to solve the complex challenges facing our estuaries, coasts, and oceans.
We are Louisiana's only master's and doctoral program in oceanography, preparing graduate students to conduct innovative research that protects ecosystems, sustains marine life, and strengthens communities.

Degrees in Oceanography & Coastal Sciences
We offer the following degrees:
- Bachelor of Science in Coastal Meteorology
- Master's Thesis
- Master's Professional
- Master's in Coastal & Ecological Engineering (joint with College of Engineering)
- PhD

A legacy of discovery
Since the founding of the Coastal Studies Institute in 1952, LSU coastal scientists and oceanographers have been conducting groundbreaking research and advancing knowledge about coastal and marine ecosystems. These timelines celebrate our legacy of discovery and recognize the men and women who have brought us to where we are today.
